NaNoWriMo 2019 – Where to start

NaNoWriMo 2019 is the National Novel Writing Month. It starts every year on 1st November. You have a month to write 50,000 words of a novel.

This breaks down to 1,507 words a day.

Now, I have tried to complete this challenge over the past 5 years and have never really made it past the first few weeks.

But this year I’m prepared. So, I want to help you make the most out of NaNoWriMo too.

Yes I know I’m a little late in writing this but it starts today and you’ve still got time to catch up even if you don’t start till tomorrow.

Where to start

The first thing you need to do is sign up. It is simple. Pop over to the NaNoWriMo site and enter your details. The site is full of amazing content and the forums are amazingly supportive.

Each area of any country has a section full of other writers who are also taking part in the challenge. They host online write-ins, in-person meetups and writing sessions. Perfect for cheering each other on.

Pantser or Planner?

Historically I have been a pantser. I don’t really like to know what’s coming up in life. I like to let the words flow naturally. But I think, in the past, this has been why I have failed at this challenge.

So, I’ve planned this year. But not completely. I have always struggled to find a plan that allows me to write a vague outline with a story arch but without actually tying me down.

That was until I listened to a recent episode of #AmWriting. Sarina Bowen shared a book she was reading, Take Off Your Pants and it sounded interesting. So I invested in both the audio and the Kindle version of the book.

Now I have an outline that is concrete enough for me to know who the characters are and where the story is going. But without detailing all the fine details, making me feel constrained.
