Here is another of my go-to essential oils, tea tree. It is such a versatile oil and has a clean medicinal smell. Although it does always remind me of my days working in a beauty salon waxing from 9-5!
Although I like the scent this oil has, if you cannot tolerate it, then I would recommend you try manuka essential oil as an alternative.
Tea Tree Essential Oil
How is the oil made?
Tea tree or Melaleuca alternifolia is distilled using steam distillation from the leaves of the plant. It gives a slightly yellow oil that smells fresh, medicinal, woody, clean and herbaceous.
Tea tree was given it’s name by Captain Cook’s crew who brewed the small, dark leaves to create a tea substitute.
Aborigines used it due to it’s astounding healing properties and during World War II, medics recognised its antiseptic and germicidal effects.
Tea tree essential oil is a powerful yet non-irritating antiseptic that kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is an immunostimulant, an insecticide and an expectorant.
Ways to use Tea Tree Oil
Similar to Lavender, tea tree can be used in many different ways. Here are the main ones:
- Tea tree can be used to treat cuts, burns, acne, stings, nappy rash, blisters and herpes.
- It is also very effective for treating fungal and yeast infections.
- Tea tree can also be used to clean the home. Add a few drops to 1/2 cup of baking soda to create a scrub for your toilet.
This oil is perfectly safe to use in the home as long as it is diluted properly. For use on the skin a maximum of 15% dilution. All safety advice you need to know can be found over at Essential Oils – What you need to know.
