Tea Tree Essential Oil - What you need to know

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Here is another of my go-to essential oils, tea tree. It is such a versatile oil and has a clean medicinal smell. Although it does always remind me of my days working in a beauty salon waxing from 9-5!

Although I like the scent this oil has, if you cannot tolerate it, then I would recommend you try manuka essential oil as an alternative.

How is the oil made?

Tea tree or Melaleuca alternifolia is distilled using steam distillation from the leaves of the plant. It gives a slightly yellow oil that smells fresh, medicinal, woody, clean and herbaceous.

Herbal Tradition

Tea tree was given it’s name by Captain Cook’s crew who brewed the small, dark leaves to create a tea substitute.

Aborigines used it due to it’s astounding healing properties and during World War II, medics recognised its antiseptic and germicidal effects.

Properties

Tea tree essential oil is a powerful yet non-irritating antiseptic that kills bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is an immunostimulant, an insecticide and an expectorant.
